The five-minute rule always applies: only feed what's finished in five minutes.
Prime growing season. Metabolism is at full throttle — feed high-protein growth koi food and colour-enhancing diets with spirulina and astaxanthin to build size and deep, vivid colour.
Condition fish for the cold ahead. Ease from growth food to a balanced staple diet, and start blending in wheatgerm as the water dips below 18°C.
Digestion slows right down. Feed easily digested wheatgerm koi food on milder days only — and stop feeding completely once the pond drops below 10°C.
Wake the pond up gently: wheatgerm first, then staple food as the water warms past 15°C. Small meals rebuild condition after winter without fouling the water.

It depends on the season and your goal. For everyday feeding choose a quality staple koi food; for size, a high-protein growth food in summer; for deeper reds and oranges, a colour-enhancing diet with spirulina or astaxanthin; and for winter, wheatgerm. Once your pond water drops below about 15°C — typically April to May in most of South Africa. Wheatgerm is easier to digest in cool water, so it feeds your koi without loading a slowing gut. Switch back to staple and growth foods in spring when the water holds above 15°C again.
Stop feeding completely below 10°C. Koi are cold-blooded and their digestion nearly shuts down in cold water, so food eaten now can sit and rot in the gut. Your koi live comfortably off body reserves until the water warms — a pond thermometer takes the guesswork out of it.
Yes — goldfish and koi are close cousins and share very similar diets. The catch is pellet size and richness: goldfish need mini pellets, granules or flakes they can actually swallow, and fancy goldfish do better on sinking pellets. Save the big, rich growth pellets for the koi.
Little and often, adjusted by season: two to four small meals a day in summer, one to two in spring and autumn, and only occasional wheatgerm in winter. Always apply the five-minute rule — feed only what is finished in five minutes, and scoop out anything left over.
Floating pellets let you watch your fish eat — the best daily health check there is, and they keep uneaten food visible. Sinking pellets suit fancy goldfish, shy fish and bottom-feeders like sturgeon. Many keepers feed mostly floating with some sinking food for fish that miss out at the surface.
Colour is fed: carotenoid pigments like spirulina, krill and astaxanthin intensify red, orange and gold markings. Feed a colour-enhancing koi food through the warm months, keep the water clean, and give it six to eight weeks — genetics set the pattern, food brings it out.

Three easy options: slow-release vacation blocks for up to two weeks, weekend feeder blocks for short trips, or a solar automatic pond feeder that doses pellets on schedule. In winter, if the water is below 10°C, your pond fish don't need holiday food at all.
